Chapter Eight

Carlos passed Becky MacDonald a Styrofoam cup of burned coffee. She took the cup with shaky hands and a grateful smile that didn’t quite reach all the way to her teary eyes. Agent Rose pulled out a metal chair across from Becky and took a seat. They had moved into an interrogation room in order to speak to her without distraction, and I had gone into the adjacent room, watching through the double-sided glass.

Becky took a timid sip, her fingers trembling as she held on to the cup. Carlos pulled out his notepad and slid into a seat beside Agent Rose.

“When did you first notice your daughter go missing, Mrs. MacDonald?”

She sucked in a sharp breath and let it out in a broken sob. Carlos waited until Becky composed herself, then said, “I know this is difficult, but we’ll need you to answer some questions in order to find Kyla.”

“Of course,” she whispered, her voice hoarse from crying. “It was this morning. I-I took her over to Riverside to play and feed the ducks, her and some of her friends. I turned away for a moment to talk to my friend Carolyn, just for a moment, and then she was gone.”

“Carolyn went with you to the park?” Agent Rose asked.

“Yes, her daughter, Susie, was with us.”

“How many of Kyla’s friends were there? Do you have names?” Carlos asked, his pen furiously scribbling across his notepad.

I took a sip of coffee from my mug and grimaced. Mud would have tasted better, but at the moment, it was all I had to keep me going.

Becky closed her eyes and focused on breathing, an attempt possibly to compose herself. Agent Rose looked over at Carlos.

“Mrs. MacDonald?”

“Two friends, Susie Carlisle and Selena Ramirez, and then me and Carolyn,” Becky said.

My heart thumped in my chest. Carlos’s pen went still, and he glanced over to the two-way mirror. I swallowed thickly, my tongue feeling like a lead slab in my mouth. I walked out of the room and pulled my cell phone out of my pocket, calling Sofia. She answered on the second ring.

“Hello?”

“Sofia, where is Selena?” I asked.

“Home,” she said, and after a second, my heart started beating again. The relief didn’t last long. “I was going to call you, though. Selena came back from playing with a friend crying, saying something about her missing. I wasn’t able to get everything out of her, but it sounded like…”

She stopped and let the words hang over the line. I closed my eyes and heaved a heavy sigh. “The mom is in an interrogation room now with Carlos, telling us what’s going on. When she dropped Selena’s name, I walked out to call you.”

“No, ese pobre niña. It isn’t him, is it?”

I could hear the terror in her voice, the fear of what had come so close to snatching up her daughter.

“I don’t know yet; it’s possible. Jesus, anything is possible. Look, I’ve got to go. I just wanted to check on Selena and make sure she’s okay.
